Prof. Sankar Kumar Sanyal was born on 30 July, 1948 into a family of landlords of Howrah and Midnapore. His father, Late Acharya Dr. Sailendranath Sanyal, philosopher of repute and activist of Quit India Movement of 1942 renounced the material life in his middle age and devoted rest of his life as a sanyasin dispensing with all pleasures of life including huge tracks of land bequeathed to him by his forebears. They settled in Ghusuri, Howrah an industrial suburb of Kolkata and earned a niche for himself and his extended family.
