An Astute Gandhian
During this period he came into the close proximity of renowned Gandhians of the State like Sri Prafulla Chandra Sen, Sri Sitaram Sakseria, Sri Charu Chandra Bhandari, Sri Sakti Ranjan Bose, Sri Kshitish Roychowdhury, Sri Rakhal Chandra Dey, Sri Panna Lal Dasgupta, Justice Sankar Prasad Mitra, Ms. Ashoka Gupta all of who had impeccable credentials and also has had the unique opportunity to work closely as chief functionary under the able leadership of such eminent Gandhian personalities and others. This association with so many Gandhian luminaries brought him into the Harijan Sevak Sangh, Bengal of which he remains Hon'y Secretary since 1978 spreading the activities among the underprivileged and the economically weaker sections of the society. Under his able leadership, the moribund Harijan Sevak Sangh of Bengal revived its activities and spread all over the state with innovative programmes based on Gandhian philosophy, which had had its impact on the welfare of the marginalized and the downtrodden in the nooks and cranny of the state. As the Hon'y Secretary of the Sangh he frequently visited Harijan and Adivasi areas of West Bengal and took up some socio-economic and socio-cultural programmes for their uplift. Through his active participation in developmental work in Gandhian models he got recognition as one of the noted Gandhian activists of the State. Gradually he became associated with almost all the reputed Gandhian organizations of the State like Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Gram Seva Kendra, West Bengal State People's Committee, Gandhi Darshan Samity, Gandhi Memorial Committee, Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Sarvodaya Mondal, Gandhi Vichar Parisad, Vidyashram, Gram Swaraj Sangha, Rural Development Consortium, Loka Kalyan Parishad and Gandhi Peace Foundation, etc. There were still many other Gandhian and constructive organizations spread over the entire State, which were in disfunctional conditions and Sri Sanyal helped their resuscitation and coordinated their activities so as to keep Gandhi's ideas and ideals alive amongst the people of the State.
In 1974-75 there was difference of opinion in the Sarvodaya world between Acharya Vinoba Bhabe and Sri Jayaprakash Narayan and ultimately the Sarvodaya world was divided into two groups and they did not even hold meetings, conferences etc. jointly at that time. In March 1980, Sri Sanyal organized a big conference at Krishnanagar, Nadia where both the camps converged for the first and the last time through the august presence of Sri Charu Chandra Bhandari, Dr. Nipendra Nath Bose, Sri Shakti Ranjan Bose, Sri Pannalal Dasgupta, Sri Kshitish Roychowdhury and other prominent leaders of both the groups along with few hundreds constructive workers.
His dazzling personality and outstanding performance drew the attention of Padmabibhusan late Ms. Nirmala Deshpande, MP, the spiritual daughter of Sant Vinoba Bhabe, who being an able spotter of men of organization, picked up Sri Sanyal early and entrusted him with organizational activities of all organizations with which she was associated. In 1985 she appointed him as the member of the Central Board and Regional Secretary of All India Harijan Sevak Sangh, founded by Mahatma Gandhi way back in 1932 and subsequently made him the Vice President of the Sangh (1997-2008), General Secretary of Akhil Bharat Rachanatmak Samaj and many other national level Gandhian organizations superseding more experienced and eminent personalities. Such was her trust in him. Sri Sanyal remained one of her trusted confidants till her demise. All these led to national and international exposure of Sri Sanyal as a noted Gandhian organizer of the country. His enormous Gandhian profile drew him closer to important family members of Gandhiji like his grandson, Sri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal, granddaughters, Ms. Ela Gandhi, Secretary, Gandhi Development Trust, Durban, South Africa and Ms. Tara Gandhi Bhattacharya.
