President, All India Harijan Sevak Sangh, Delhi (HSS) – a National Level Voluntary Organization founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932 for the socio-economic and socio-cultural uplift of the downtrodden through various welfare and rural development projects throughout the country and succeeded to this universally acclaimed post once occupied by National leaders like Sri G.D. Birla, Mata Rameswari Nehru, Sri Biyogi Hariji, Padmabibhusan Nirmala Deshpande and other Gandhian stalwarts of the country. Incidentally this is for the first time a person has been elected from Bengal and Eastern and North Eastern India to this exalted post.

Recipient of ‘Non-Conventional Energy Award’ from Sri Surendra Mohan, Chairman, KVIC awarded for incomparable achievement in the field of Non-Conventional Energy particularly in Improved Chullah Programme on 5th July 1997 on the occasion of attainment of 35 years of NCE Programme of KVIC & RERDA-INDIA under the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES).

Recipient of ‘Moonis Raza Memorial Award’ by Global Association of NRI (Non Resident Indians) in recognition of exemplary contribution to National Development, International Understanding, Peace, Enrichments of life and for outstanding achievements in the field of specialization at the institution of Engineers (India) New Delhi on 3rd April 1998.

Recipient of ‘International Man of the Year – 1997-98’ awarded by the Editorial Board of International Biographical Centre (IBC), Cambridge, England on 28th April 1998. Recipient of ‘Corporate Energy Management Award’ awarded by Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, Kolkata, the fist B-School of India under the University of Calcutta on 14th December 2010, the Energy Conservation Day for contribution in the field of energy management.

Major achievements :

Conducted Regional Orientation Course on Constructive Workers of Eastern Zone in 1984 graced by the august presence of Mother Teresa, the Noble laureate for Peace.

Organized South Asia Peace Meet and All India Constructive Workers Conference under the aegis of Akhil Bharat Rachnatmak Samaj at Salt Lake Stadium, Calcutta from 18th to 20th January, 2000 which was attended by more than 12 thousand delegates from all over the country & abroad and was the first of its kind in Calcutta.

Organized a number of Youth Leadership Training Camps and Orientation courses.

Have been successfully organizing training of young rural entrepreneurs in Entrepreneurship Development Programme under Rural Employment Generation Programme sponsored by Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Government of India since 2005-2006 and has so far trained 1,784 entrepreneurs who have invested Rs. 50,42,90,407.00 financed by nationalized banks. All of them have set up their respective units comprising of zari embroidery, readymade garments, carpentry, tailoring, gate grill, beauty parlour, paddy to rice, silver ornaments manufacture, electrical bulbs, various items on food products etc.

Organized installation of 5,31,018 improved smokeless chullahs in Birbhum, Medinipur, Murshidabad and Malda districts of West Bengal to ensure smoke free kitchens sponsored by Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Government of India under Non-Conventional Energy Programme of Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.

Arranged construction of 595 low cost latrines and 95 rural low cost houses sponsored by CAPART for the below poverty line families.

Led various groups from West Bengal in many national and international seminars and conferences including leading a delegation to the National Integration Peace March Campaign in July 1983 at Punjab in the wake of separatist movement of Punjab.

Establishment of a big industrial estate in a remote area of Howrah. The uniqueness of the project was that 307 Micro and Small Entrepreneurs have purchased land directly from the farmers without creating any problem or tension and that the project was overwhelmingly environment friendly in as much as the entire area is proposed to be illuminated through solar energy. It is worth mentioning that this industrial cluster has been included in the National Innovative Council set up by the Hon’ble Prime Minister out of the 25 clusters amongst 400 in the country.

Pioneer in establishment of a Regional Centre of Design Clinic in West Bengal, the first of its kind in Eastern India of National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad which provides expert advice, solutions and support financial assistance with necessary help to create awareness and the application of design facilities at all levels which adds value to the existing product and services.

Literary activities :

Editor, Jatiya Samachintan – leading literary Bengali journal on Art, Culture and literature since 1986.

Writing for periodicals and journals on different issues including developmental and national problems.

Edited and published number of books, papers and reports on development for the Voluntary Organizations.

Foreign Delegation :

• Represented India as delegate in ‘South Asian Seminar on Legal Aid’ held in Kathmandu, Nepal in March 1986.

• Represented India in Italy, France, Switzerland and United Kingdom (U.K.) as a member of the ‘Gandhi-in-Action’ group for people’s march for non-violent society on the occasion of ‘International Year of Peace’ in June-July 1986.

• Represented India as a delegate to the United Kingdom, being jointly nominated by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and British Government as only NGO representative in a group of seven senior Government officials of India in March - June 1995.

• Participated in South West Asia Regional Conference of SERVAS International held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 10th & 11th December 1999 as the only representative from SERVAS INDIA.

• Represented India as a delegate of Association of People of Asia at China led by late Nirmala Deshpande from 28th October to 3rd November, 2003 on the invitation of Chinese Association of International Understanding, visiting Beijing and Shanghai and participated in bilateral dialogues with Chinese Association of International Understanding, State Council Leading Group on Poverty Alleviation and Development, All China Women’s Federation, Tibetology Research Center, Shanghai Foreign Affairs Department to foster people to people contact, friendship and understanding amongst the people of Asia for a peaceful and non-violent world and to identify cultural, educational and voluntary organizations in different countries of Asia.

• Represented India as a delegate of Association of People of Asia to Lahore, Pakistan along with different religious heads of India and other eminent personalities from political, academic, social, professional, litterateur fields with the aim to promote peace, friendship, brotherhood and strengthening goodwill between the two nations from 30th August to 1st September 2004 on the occasion of birth anniversary of noted Sufi Saint Baba Bulle Shah, who is greatly revered by people in India and Pakistan for his messages of universal significance for promoting peace and harmony in the sub-continent.

• Represented India as a distinguished speaker of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) under the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India to speak on Gandhian values and their contemporary relevance and ideas and ideals of Gandhiji at Dhaka University, Bangladesh. Bangladesh Bharat Sampriti Parishad, Gandhi Ashram Trust – Noakhali and Feni districts, Ramakrishna Mission – Dhaka, Bangladesh Institute of Law & International Affairs etc. from 11th October to 16th October 2004.

• Represented India as a delegate of Association of People of Asia in the World Social Forum held at Karachi, Pakistan with the aim to promote peace, friendship, brotherhood and strengthening goodwill between different nations from 24th to 29th March 2006 and chaired a symposium on Nuclear Free South Asia with elimination of nuclear stock piles in India and Pakistan and diverting nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

• Represented India in a 15-member delegation at the conference on the centenary celebration of Satyagraha organized by Gandhi Development Trust in association with Kwa-Zulu Natal Government at the Durban University of Technology in South Africa from 10 – 13 September 2006.

• Represented India in a 15-member delegation at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Lanka Jatika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya and a conference on “Concerted Community Action for a Sustainable Life on Earth Fair to All” held at Vishva Niketan International Peace and Meditation Center at Moratuwa, Colombo, Sri Lanka from 4 – 7 December 2008.

• Led a Gandhian delegation from India to the Parliament of the World’s Religions held at Salt Lake city, Utah, USA from 15th to 19th October 2015 which was attended by over 10,000 delegates from 80 countries and 50 Heads of different religions. It may be mentioned that this was the first time that a Gandhian delegation was invited to attend this illustrious Parliament. This was a proud moment for all the Gandhian fraternity. It is worth remembering but without comparing the fact that the same Parliament was attended by Swami Vivekananda in 1893 at Chicago, USA.

• Represented a Gandhi Peace Mission to South Africa from 8th to 15th February 2016 to carry the goodwill and gratitude of Indian nation to the great South African Republic which moulded young Barrister Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi into a Mahatma on the occasion of completion of hundred years of his return to India from South Africa after alleviating the miseries of the Indians in South Africa and then lighting the freedom movement leading to its successful culmination of achieving freedom of India. The Gandhi Peace Mission urges humanity to move from Conflict and Violence to Dialogue, Reconciliation, Development and Peace.
